DETAILS:
The Gage County Sheriff's Office was selected to participate in the national “Click It or Ticket” campaign. The dates of the grant period were from May 19th until June 1st, 2008. The mini-grant was sponsored by the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety. Numerous full-time, part-time and reserve deputies participated in the grant. All overtime and road patrol miles will be reimbursed to Gage County. Deputies patrolled an additional 863 extra miles searching for traffic violations of motorists in Gage County. Thirty-six contacts were made with motorists, including vehicle equipment violations, warnings, and citations. Seat belt and child safety restraint awareness was the primary goal of the Gage County Sheriff's Office to make our roadways safer for all who use them.

As part of the participation in the grant, the Sheriff’s Office was required to conduct a Pre-wave and a Post-wave “Click It or Ticket” seat belt survey. A Pre-wave “Click It or Ticket” seat belt survey was conducted on May 11, 2008 at Highway 77 and 6th Street in Cortland. 1,300 cars were observed in a two hour period. 2,149 people were observed wearing a safety restraint and 508 people were not observed to be wearing a safety restraint for that survey. The Pre-wave survey numbers indicate a 74.5% seat belt usage. The Post-wave survey was conducted on June 8, 2008 at Highway 77 and 6thStreet in Cortland. 914 cars were observed in a 2 hour period. 923 people were observed wearing a safety restraint and 236 people were not observed to be wearing a safety restraint. The Post-wave survey numbers indicate a 76.4% seat belt usage. This is an increase of 1.9% of seat belt usage over the 2 week “Click It or Ticket” campaign. Six members of the Cortland Explorers group and one member of the Gage County MAPS (Multiple Agencies Partnering for Success) helped conduct the surveys.
