On Thursday November 5, 2009 at approximately 5:10 pm, 45 year old Barry E. Vilda of Beatrice walked up to the front door of the Gage County Sheriff’s Office with a pry bar and broke out the glass. Mr. Vilda made entry into the main lobby of the Sheriff’s Office where he was met by several Deputies.
Part-time Deputy/Emergency Management Director Mark Meints observed the male walking toward the front door of the Sheriff’s Office carrying a pry bar. Meints called on the radio advising that there was a male approaching the front door of the Sheriff’s Office with a pry bar as Meints was following the subject. Chief Deputy Klaus and Investigator Shepardson were in the office and responded to the main lobby at the Sheriff’s Office. Upon arriving at the lobby, they were met by Mr. Vilda holding a pry bar. At that time, Deputy Meints, Investigator Shepardson, and Chief Deputy Klaus pulled their weapons and advised Mr. Vilda to drop the weapon. Mr. Vilda was raising the pry bar and yelling for deputies to shoot him.
