Fingerprint Techonology
The Gage County Detention Center is moving forward with fingerprinting technology thanks to the donation of surplus property from the Story County, Iowa Sheriff's Office. While on a recent tour of the Iowa facility by Sheriff Millard "Gus" Gustafson and members of the Jail Steering Committee a discussion came up about the surplus property. The property in question was an Automated Fingerprint Identification System known as AFIS. This was a $62,000.00 piece of equipment when first purchased. It had been taken out of service in order to make way for a newer updated model. After an agreement was signed a few weeks later and a second trip back to Nevada, Iowa, the AFIS machine is now located at the Gage County Detention Center. Although this particular AFIS machine is not updated enough to go on-line statewide it can serve as a stand alone. Once in operation it will allow correctional staff to fingerprint individuals without the need for ink. This process should save both time and money. In time the hope is that the Gage County Detention Center will be able to obtain a newer updated model through the State of Nebraska that will allow us to go on-line.
