The Gage County Sheriffs Office currently employs a canine unit. The canine is a dual purpose canine trained in the areas of patrol work and narcotics detection. The canine, a five year old German Shepherd named ARNO, (pronounced are-no), was obtained through donated and grant funding to assist patrol deputies with calls for service. ARNO received training with his handler through the Nebraska State Patrol. This training is approximately three months long and has ongoing training.
ARNO can detect the odor of marijuana, methamphetamine, cocaine, and heroin. ARNO can also track suspects that flee from law enforcement or from scenes. He can locate evidence and suspects inside buildings and detain them. ARNO is responsible for the arrest of several persons who have committed felonies and misdemeanors and for the recovery of several pounds of narcotics. ARNO is also a member of the Gage County Emergency Response Team.
