The office of the Sheriff for the County of Gage has existed since 1857. The Sheriff holds an elected office, which is voted on by the citizens of the county. The Sheriff is elected to a four year term and he or she may serve additional terms if re-elected by the citizens.

On April 26, 2010, staff members of the Gage County Detention Center found inmate Joshua Lopez, a 27-year-old Beatrice resident, attempting to commit suicide by hanging himself in his cell.
