What is the difference between a Sheriff´s Department and a Sheriff´s Office and why should it matter?

Black´s Law Dictionary defines the terms as follows:

DEPARTMENT: "one of the major divisions of the executive branch of the government . . . generally, a branch or division of governmental administration."

It is the duty of the Sheriff to serve or otherwise execute according to law and return writs or other legal process issued by lawful authority and directed or committed to the Sheriff and to perform such other duties as required by law.

Old JailWhen William Jackson “Jack” Marion was hanged for murder March 25, 1885, he took to the grave the knowledge of what really happened to John Cameron. What he didn’t know was that he would go down in history as the last person officially hanged in Gage County as well as in the State of Nebraska. A copy of the actual death warrant served by Sheriff Nathaniel Herron is on file at the Gage County Historical Society Museum in Beatrice.
